Sterling National Bank
Reviews and Complaints
The worst that I have ever had
Terrible
Put money in my checking account. Some one tried to use my debit card .
Now my acciun has been on hold for 3 days keep getting the run around . Never had a problem when it was Astoria.
Lousy bank in ever cent.
Can't get to my online account! Wind up being handed from one person to another.
Can't get a straight answer out of anyone. I called a person that had their number on line to get an answer, and I was told that this was told it was his private line, in an extremely annoyed tone. If it was a private line then what was it doing out on the web? This is bank is a scam if they won't answer or help in any way.
This is not a bank! I've never been treated this way in my 40+ years of being with Astoria. My advice is get your money out now before it disappears. That's if they will give you your money back.
Every cent!
I'm calling the FDIC! ***
Preferred solution: To warn people about this bank and maybe put them out of business.
Slowwwwww
Very poor communication and customer service
What a mess at the Rocky Point branch!
August, 2018 -Total mess at Rocky Point location as they "worked out the kinks" in their new and improved - really? - website and app for their customers. Total waste of time and money and a big inconvenience for customers like me! Stressed out staff ... nerves on edge ... tons of calls from angry, frustrated customers.
Sterling hired a company to handle all the calls and they were rude, unprofessional and useless. Cheap obviously.
I do not want any calls about this matter from the bank ... I will not fill out review forms ... this is the only comment I have.
The employees cannot do anything to fix this mess ... they are trying to help out and handle the calls as they come in ... lots of them.
Upper management is to blame ....100% and their transition process failed miserably. Shame on all of you.
The worst service
I have been doing business with Sterling National Bank(Astoria bank) for more than 20 years and this year was the worst. When they changed their online services, I got the most horrible experience with their phone service.
The customer representatives do not know what they are doing and they will not help you. I have been calling for days because they will transfer the call to another department and I literally waited for hours- I put the speaker on.
I was frustrated and just ended the call.
I called back today and the representative who I have spoken with stated he cannot help me because their phone system is down. I am frustrated and upset with their very poor service.
Debit Card keeps getting declined
This has happened twice in the last few months. How embarrassing to have money in the bank and get your card declined.
Apparently this is an issue with Sterling. I called the 888 number which says that it is 24 hour and it is not, had to wait until 9:00. I called the customer service number and was told I had to go into the office because my phone number is incorrect. I went into the branch and the rep there verified my phone number as correct and she had to call the customer service number.
Which doesn't make any sense.
I sat there for 45 minutes while she was on the phone trying to straighten this out. Ridiculous, I'm out of there.
Declines, System Outages, and Updated Info
My card gets declined when there is money in my account. The computer system also goes out often and I am left unable to use my debit card at the store or ATM and can only access money by going to a branch to withdraw cash.
I have also tried to update my address several times after moving and no matter who I speak to it never goes through. I must still use my former address and zip code for billing. The card is declined when I use what should now be the billing info.
This is unacceptable and I am frequently unable to use my own money. Sterling is absolutely horrible and I am leaving this bank.
Horrible
Our branch was previously Astoria and before that Long Island Savings and before that County Federal. Have had an account of some kind there for 40 years and never considered leaving regardless of the changes, but Sterling??!!.....the absolute worst.
Even small transactions seem to be problems. Calling their 800 number for a simple balance check, be prepared for a major digital menu run-around. Yesterday we learned they are no longer using deposit or withdrwal slips....you just tell the teller what you want??!! Don't even think about getting a live person on the phone unless you have quite a bit of time to spend on hold.
We are looking in to another bank pronto. There is no way we will keep our hard earned money with this group.
TERRIBLE ON LINE CUSTOMER SERVICE
They implemented a new online banking platform this week and it has been nothing but a headache and problem since. They sent at least 10 emails with instructions of what to do to create a new account and every email was a nightmare to open and you had to get a "temporary passcode" JUST TO OPEN THE EMAILS.
Then after following step by step directions with the worst most tedious procedure and finally getting a user id and password set up - we get error messages and cannot log in to our account FOR 4 DAYS - not thru the old log in and not thru the new log in - error messages, - called the customer service line and after being on HOLD FOR ONE HOUR, the person had no clue how to fix it and said "everyone is having problems". Two days of broken promises of no return phone calls and no solutions and I STILL CANNOT ACCESS MY ACCOUNT!!!!! The most unprofessional non caring bank I have ever dealt with.
Going back to my CHASE account which has no problems logging in and when their customer service people say they are going to call me back with a solution - THEY DO!!!!!! Upper management better look into Sterlings customer service!!!
AWFUL
Took me three days to get on to online banking - and now I'm trying to pay bills and of course the window to get there doesn't work. In the branch everyone is stressed out and can't do the transactions.
What took five minutes now takes 25. I'm out of there. The problem with converting to a new system is the system actually has to be better and actually work. And this is not better, and doesn't seem to work.
The tellers are all frustrated. What a shame.
Astoria was such a nice local bank, all Sterling had to do was keep the same system, but they didn't and now the consumer has to accept lesser service, yet again. Just not fair at all.
POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE/WORST BANK EVER

This is now standard procedure with banks. I assume you still have your debit card.
If some crook buys a bunch of credit card numbers, obtained from skimmers or from the people who hacked Marshalls, Target, etc. and makes a lot of charges to the debit cards, the credit card processors will see this and put all those cards numbers on hold.
You will have to get a new card number and possibly go in in person to activate it. I know it sucks but that is the downside to debit cards - the hassle of changing accounts if your card has been compromised.
